handAmericans continue to be most concerned about the economy and dissatisfied with the government, according to the most recent Gallup poll.

Those two issues topped the list of concerns in the poll conducted March 2-6. Concern about unemployment was No. 3.

At least 5 percent of Americans mention several other issues, including immigration, health care, race relations, terrorism, the election and the federal budget deficit.

Americans also mentioned the presidential election season with the highest rate of frequency since Gallup began tracking that category in 2001.  Many of the responses in the current survey specifically mentioned Donald Trump and his role in the election. Those citing the election as the most important problem were primarily independents and Democrats, Gallup said.

Here were the problems respondents identified as their top concerns:

  • Economy …. 17 percent
  • Dissatisfaction with government ….15 percent
  • Unemployment/jobs …. 11 percent
  • Immigration …. 8 percent
  • Health care …. 8 percent
  • Race relations …. 6 percent
  • Terrorism …. 6 percent
  • Election …. 5 percent
  • Federal budget deficit …. 5 percent
  • Moral/ethical decline …. 4 percent
  • Education …. 4 percent

Results for this Gallup poll are based on telephone interviews conducted March 2-6, 2016, with a random sample of 1,019 adults, aged 18 and older, living in all 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia. For results based on the total sample of national adults, the margin of sampling error is ±4 percentage points at the 95 percent confidence level. All reported margins of sampling error include computed design effects for weighting.
