Originally, the Treasury had planned to change the $10 bill which currently features Alexander Hamilton. The plan was that Hamilton would either share the bill with a woman or the Treasury would release two different bills.
The plan suffered from backlash as some complained about the idea of a woman having to share the bill. Others wanted the woman to be on the $20 bill because of its higher profile and others complained due to the historical figures involved.
An organization called Women on 20s conducted an online poll that indicated Tubman’s popularity for the honor. Tubman was an abolitionist and key figure in the Underground Railroad. She beat out First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, civil rights hero Rosa Parks and Cherokee Nation Chief Wilma Mankiller in the poll.
