Americans are feeling a lot better about their financial situation than they were just a year ago. According to a Gallup poll released Monday, 47 percent of those surveyed said they were better off now compared with a year ago. Twenty-eight percent said they were worse off.

At the same time last year more than half (54 percent) of respondents reported that their financial situation was getting worse, just 23 percent claimed they were getting better.

The rosier outlook was found across all key groups in the poll and they expect the good times to continue for a while at least. Sixty-five percent of people said they expect their finances to be better off a year from, now while 15 percent said they expect to be worse off. Americans tend to be optimistic about the future. At no point in the last 40 years have more than half of people surveyed expected their personal finances to be worse off a year in the future.

The findings are also in line with Americans’ more favorable look toward the future and growing consumer confidence.
