Americans have mixed views on economic conditions

WASHINGTON, D.C. – While most Americans believe the current economic conditions are excellent or good, they are more pessimistic about the future. That caused Gallup’s Economic Confidence Index to stay relatively stable at -12 in the last week. That means people, overall, are more negative about the economy than positive.

The index is an average of two polls, how Americans rate the current economy and whether they feel the economy is going to get better or worse in the future.

The numbers continue a slow downward trend for the index which topped out at +5 to begin the year, meaning more people were positive about the country’s economy than negative.

The weekly index slipped to as low as -17 during the July 8-10 period, a time that coincided with the Greek debt crisis. Aside from that dip, the averages have ranged from -9 to -12 in July.

While most Americans, 55 percent, rate the current economy as good or excellent, 57 percent say the economy is getting worse. Only 39 percent of respondents in the latest poll believe the economy is getting better.
